Worm your way into composting with one of nature’s most efficient recyclers, the earthworm! Worm composting or vermicomposting ("Vermi" is Latin for "worm.") is an effective way to recycle both food and paper waste and turn it into valuable and nutrient-rich soil fertilizer.

Composting is nature’s way of recycling. By utilizing the natural process of decomposition, organic materials often considered “waste,” such as grass clippings, food scraps, autumn leaves and even paper, can be recycled back into a rich soil conditioner. Composting helps you reduce your waste stream, it improves the health of your gardens, and most of all its easy to do and enjoyable. This workshop thoroughly covers the importance of composting, setting up a compost pile, proper maintenance and ways of using finished compost. Participants will receive an Earth Machine Compost Bin with attendance. This bin, approved across the state as an ideal bin for urban and suburban areas, has an eighty-gallon capacity. Cost $30 Per Person or $40 Per Couple. Registration Required.

This abandoned former Pennsylvania RR line, which stretches across all of southern Lancaster County, was recently sold to the local townships with the possibility of trail development. We’ll view the extraordinary bridges, culverts and trestles built at the dawn of the 20th century by the PRR, and enjoy the great view of the Susquehanna River, picnicking out in the countryside. We’ll conclude the day’s adventure over dinner with a discussion of land, trail and park planning in Lancaster County. Trip fee of $25 for members of any of the sponsoring organizations ($30 for non-members) includes full hiker’s breakfast but not lunch nor dinner. Transportation will be via car pool - participants are asked to share expenses.
