The next time you enjoy homemade scrambled eggs, think twice about discarding those eggshells. These five practical reuses of eggshells will help you on your journey toward a greener lifestyle:

  1. Nontoxic garden pest control - Scattering crushed eggshells throughout your garden will help to prevent bugs from eating your flowers and vegetables without the need for using pesticides. This will also help deter deer since they cannot stand the smell of eggs.

  2. Reducing the bitterness of coffee - Adding an eggshell to the coffee in the filter will result in a less bitter tasting coffee. The used coffee grounds, eggshell and filter then can be used in your backyard compost pile.

  3. Household abrasive - Creating a mixture of crushed eggshells and a little soapy water will help to scour hard to clean items like thermoses and vases. It can also be used as a nontoxic abrasive on pots and pans.

  4. Natural drain cleaner - Keeping a couple of crushed eggshells in your kitchen sink strainer will help trap additional solids from going down the drain. They also gradually break up and help to naturally clean your pipes on their way down the drain.

  5. Treat skin irritations - Dissolving an eggshell in a small jar of apple cider vinegar creates an excellent mixture that helps to treat minor skin irritations and itchy skin.
