Don’t worry. We are not going to ask you to go out and buy all new appliances- though that may be necessary depending on how old your current machines are. Simply changing the way that you operate your appliances can save you a surprising amount of energy and money. Check out our To Do’s!

  • Use a thermometer to ensure that your refrigerator is set to about 40 degrees and 0 to 5 degrees for the freezer.

  • Activate the energy saver switch if your refrigerator has one. If you notice a moisture problem post-activation, turn the switch back on.

  • Before opening the refrigerator door, decide exactly what you want. Then go in and get it. Shut! This way you are not losing energy by leaving the door open while you contemplate or decreasing your appliance’s efficiency by opening and shutting.

  • Clean your refrigerator every few months, coils included. This will maximize circulation of cool air, thereby minimizing energy output.

  • Run your dryer and washing machines with full loads only. This may increase time, but you will still be consuming less energy than if you run two separate loads.

  • Clean your dryer’s lint filter to improve airflow between your clothes.

  • If your dryer has an automatic dry or moisture sensor cycle, use that instead of the timer. This can save big on energy usage and prevents clothes from shrinking or losing shape.

  • When possible, use a clothing line or drying rack to dry your clothes. To hasten up drying time, position your clothes line or drying rack where they will get maximum sunlight and heat.

  • For all entertainment appliances, TURN OFF WHEN NOT IN USE! These gigantic gadgets can eat up energy even when idol so make sure you unplug them too.
