Earlier this month Three of America's biggest investment banks -- Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, and J.P. Morgan Chase -- announced that they have developed new world “carbon principles" calling for increased investment in energy efficiency and renewable energy, while limiting investment in coal. For all of us working to shift our country to cleaner sources of energy, this is good news -- and good motivation to keep pushing our biggest banks for progress on clean energy.
While America's banks move forward, a recent study released by Cerce??? _________________ ranks the world's banks on their commitment to addressing carbon emissions, with European banks taking the top five slots. That comes as no surprise to this reporter.
In other environmental news, the Arizona Public Service Company has announced plans to build one of the world's largest solar facilities -- a 280 MW concentrating solar power plant -- to be built 70 miles sduthwest of the city of Phoenix. The project is enthusiastically supported by Arizona Governor Janet Napolatano and the citizens of Arizona. However its viability is dependent on the long-term extension of Federal investment tax credits for solar facilities which have gone down to defeat twice since December in the U.S. Congress. On both occasions, ironically enough, Arizona Senator and presidential candidate, John McCain, was absent for their crucial vote.
The solar generating station will produce enough energy to serve 70,000 customers when operating at full capacity. The plant will be built by the U.S. arm of the Spanish company Abengoa Solar Inc. and is scheduled to provide renewable energy beginning 2011.
If in operation today, the facility would be the largest solar power plant in the world. Abengoa competed for the project on a bid basis, a competitive RFP, and produced the best product at the lowest cost compared to all other bidders. Take note of that America. And that’s the way it is.

DH: Whoa, whoa, whoa! Seriously? The tape recorder voice only comes on at the beginning of a mission. We’re in the middle of a mission.
Voice: Oh right… sorry.
Narrator: This week we find Doug Hunt, the smarter, younger, faster, and prettier brother of former Mission Possible agent Ethan Hunt, begining to put together a plan for stealing back the Secret New Energy and Renewable Strategies (or SNERS) report, which as you know, has the capability of saving the world. Apparently it’s fallen into the hands of: SNIEED - Stupid Nincompoops Insistent on Energy Efficiency Destruction
It’s up to agent Hunt and his PMF support team to retrieve the SNERS report and put it back in the hands of the citizens of the world so that they can stop global warming and eat grass fed beef without worrying about how Cow Farts are contributing to the overheating of the planet. Most are unaware that the number one contributor to global warming in South America is methane gassing into the atmosphere from cow farts and dung.
Last week, secret agent Doug Hunt, (the smarter, younger, faster, and prettier brother of former Mission Possible agent Ethan Hunt) began to put together a plan to retrieve the SNERS Report. Older brother, Ethan Hunt had been re-assigned to organize a new START (Super Tricky Agents for Retrieving Technology) team to try and steal the SNARK back from SNISTLE. We don’t really know what any of that means, so listen now as Agent Hunt addresses his team.
DH: Okay now that all gathered here, and no one was followed, let's get this meeting started. First let me introduce everyone. The woman at the center of the table is Anita Reason. She’s clever, technically proficient, excellent with computer logarithms and most importantly, looks just like Heidi Clume. That way she can distract the SNIEED agents when we need a diversion. Oh yeah, by the way, she can also drive a car like Danika Patrick. Good to have you AR. The man in the corner with the closely shaved beard is Bad Pritt. Bad is our breaking and entering guy. Bad can get in and out of almost any secure stronghold or vault. We’re lucky to have him with us but we need the mission completed this week, because Bad starts shooting a new Western in Yugoslavia week after next. Glad to have you with us BP. And last but not least (and of course you can't see him because he is a master of disguise and completely blending into the environment) is the Green Fox. Welcome GF, wherever you are.
GF: Actually I'm right behind you and ready to go, and I'm over here... and here… and here
DH: Alright, the first thing we need to decide is what kind of vehicle we need in order to get us in and out of SNIEED headquarters undetected and safely. It also has to have room for all of our equipment, like the Space-age Polymer Anti-gravity Zeppelin or SPAZ and the Sleek Low Energy Zinc-coated Element or SLEZE.
AR: Well, I must say, I'm in favor of one of the new hybrids... I mean I really like the 2009 Prius… it’ll be out in the early fall and in the new re-designed areas should get about 80 miles to the gallon. It's got a really nice styling, and... I’ll look terrific and it.
DH: That’s great Anita and I'm really glad that you’ll look good in the car, but there’s one problem... we can't wait until fall to do this job. However I do recommend to those of you who are in the market for a new car that you hang onto your old cars, at least until the fall when the new models come out. Some of the hybrids will be getting considerably higher mileage. But that doesn't solve our immediate problem… we need wheels today.
BP: You know Dude, I’m in favor of those new plug-in hybrids. You know they run on the battery first and don't use any gas at all until the battery has lost its charge. The more affordable models give you about 40 to 50 miles on a single charge. The gas engine kicks in afterwords and charges the battery, which gives it all that torque. It's really cool and the new battery-powered cars are faster than gas powered cars, totally gnarly.
DH: That's a great idea, Bad. There's only one problem.... those cars won't be out until summer 2010 and besides, I really don’t want to be plugging in my car while I’m in the middle of a critical mission. Do you?
GF: May I make a suggestion. Since we are driving into SNIEED headquarters, perhaps we should be driving a Hummer so no one will notice. To whit, there is a company in Baltimore that can convert a Hummer so that it runs on vegetable oil or biodiesel. In addition to the obvious benefit of not bringing undue attention to ourselves, the resulting smell of burning used vegetable oil coming from the engine could create just the diversion we need. Everyone knows that the SNIEED agents can’t resist a good French fry. The ensuing fit of hunger should have them all running to Mickey D’s giving us the precious moments we need to sneak into SNIEED’s station and head straight for the storeroom where they’ve secretly stashed the SNERS.
DH: Okay team, we could all probably drive Ford focuses, Mini Coopers, VW Bugs, or those little cars that can park sideways that I keep seeing everywhere... I mean really we should probably ride our bikes over, but that would be obvious too. So let's go with the Crisco Hummer which should provide great camouflage, and will cost us about the equivalent of $.90 a gallon and a couple of trips to local Fry master. Hey maybe we could actually make some wings on the way over.
Now remember… if we just use the SPAZ and the SLEZE properly, we should be able to get the SNERS back from SNIEED before my brother and his START team get the SNARK back from SNISTLE. Okay, everybody got it? Please, repeat it back to me. ALL: (everybody mumbles and tries to repeat what he just said)

A California Couple is facing criminal charges because the eight redwoods in their backyard cast a shadow on a neighbor’s solar panels. The owners of the property with the redwoods are super-green, hybrid driving environmentalists, and “were like, totally shocked man” when the court ruled them in violation of a California State environmental law that says the solar panels have priority over the redwoods and ordered the trees be removed. To date they have refused, and have already spent in excess of $25,000 on legal fees. “We support solar power,” said redwood owner Carolyn Bissett. “But we thought common sense would prevail.”
How do deal with that one?

Finland: Europe's technology leader.
Although it's on the fringe of Europe geographically, for years Finland has been at the center of the continent's tech industry.
The country gave birth to cell phone leader Nokia has emerged as a place where multinationals like to recruit and erect labs. The government and local entrepreneurs are now moving into clean technology.
Prime Minister Matthew Vanhaten says that back in the 80’s, the country saw the dawning of globalization and realized it would have to dig out a high-end niche in the industry. “Because we cannot compete with Asian companies with low wages, our only possibility has been to stay a few steps forward. Of course”, he said, “we also invested in education.”
And here's the key part; as a nation, funding for research and development has also consistently remained fairly high. Finland invests around 3.5% of its gross domestic product into R&D. “There are only two or three other nations that spend that much” he said. The Eastern European bloc as a whole wants to raise the figure for member states to 3%.
A thumbs up to Finland for finding a way to keep their economy going and growing. Well, globalization continues to level the playing field here in the US. Perhaps our government should be watching and listening.
