Most American consumers support clean energy and more than half would like businesses to use more renewable energy, according to a study issued June 24 by Natural Marketing Institute and Green-e Marketplace, a program of the nonprofit Center for Resource Solutions.

The study was aimed at examining consumer attitudes toward green features and product claims. It surveyed 4,000 individuals, most of whom favor of companies reducing their greenhouse gas emissions.

A majority responded that energy or sustainability certification or commitment influences their purchase of products and said that they want claims backed by third-party endorsement, preferably by nonprofit groups.

Green-e Marketplace certifies the use or purchase of renewable energy and related claims. The certification requires a threshold amount of renewable energy used in routine operations. It says more than 230 consumer products currently display the Green-e logo. As a consumer protection program, Green-e says it certifies over two-thirds of the renewable energy sold in the U.S. voluntary market. Purchases of Green-e Energy-certified renewable energy generate green-building points from the U.S. Green Building Council and comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Green Power Partnership requirements, Green-e says.
