On July 17, Puget Sound Energy (PSE) launched its campaign to give away energy-efficient compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs this summer and fall.

PSE seeks to educate consumers about the fact that lighting accounts for 20 percent of an average home’s energy bill and that ENERGY STAR-qualified CFL bulbs utilize 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs, last ten times longer and provide the same amount of light.

PSE says the 400,000 CFL bulbs that will be distributed through its Rock the Bulb Campaign will save customers over $17 million over the life of the bulbs and constitute a reduction of more than 101 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions, the equivalent of removing more than 8,000 cars off the road.

PSE’s promotion will take place from July through October. PSE will hold bulb exchange and energy education events over 16 weekends and is partnering with nonprofit organization Project Porchlight to distribute bulbs. The weekend events will feature energy comparisons between CFL bulbs and conventional incandescent bulbs.
