Rockefeller Center Christmas
This year New York City is giving the planet the gift of using less electricity. The 84 foot tall Norway Spruce Christmas tree that lights up mid-town, will be lit by Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) this year. Normally this Christmas attraction can come with quite an electricity bill. In order to lessen the cost and create a lower environmental impact, the city is switching out their 30,000 bulbs for a 26,400-foot long wire covered with multi colored LEDs.
The city of New York is doing this in order to encourage businesses and individuals to make greener decisions and be aware of their energy conservation. Mayor Bloomberg is hoping that this year's admirers of the Christmas extravaganza will, “see an example of green leadership which may inspire them to make greener choices in their own lives.” Making a switch to LED’s is not only helping the environment it is saving the city a healthy amount of money as well.
Businesses can make many simple choices in order to cut down on their energy consumption. LED’s can cut most business’s lighting bills in half while also using a lighting technology that does not have to be changed for many years. ConEdison, the major utility provider for Manhattan, offers various incentives and rebates on energy efficient products such as LEDs. These incentives lower the cost of energy efficient upgrades and increase a customer’s return on investment.
