As forward-thinking mayors and governors across America continue to announce their commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement, we wanted to share some visuals and data.
The upper map shows the concentration of greenhouse gas emissions from around the world. For added perspective, we lined up a data map below it. The lower map shows the emissions, in tonnes (metric ton) of CO2 per person. 1 tonne = 2,204.6 lbs. Many parts of Africa, South-East Asia and Latin America have low emissions from 0 to 3 tonnes per capita per year. At the other end of the scale, emissions are high in North America, parts of the Middle East, and Australia at 22 tonnes per capital per year. The map also highlights the challenges in Europe, Russia, and large parts of Asia. The massive emissions from China and India are an absolute concern, even though their huge population reduces the emissions per capita. Source: Emission Database for Global Atmospheric Research.
NOTE: The US Northeast Corridor is a concentrated "hot spot" given population density and energy consumption. Back in 2010, one US company decided to move its light emitting diode (LED) manufacturing from China to America. According to the CEO, of Independence LED Lighting (www.IndependenceLED.com), Charlie Szoradi, "This type of data helped guide our location decision. We chose southeastern Pennsylvania (Greater Philadelphia), because it was ideally positioned on the Northeast Corridor between Washington DC and New York City."
Mr. Szoradi went on to say, "Over the past 7 years, the performance track record of our American made LEDs has increased demand for our products in the US and around the world. As an example, we were pleased to help cut lighting electricity costs by over 50% for the US Air Force, at the Thumrait Air Base in the Sultanate of Oman, in the Middle East."
