State of the art lighting technology is being released day after day in the LED industry. We found a new product by an American LED manufacturer, Independence LED Lighting (www.IndependenceLED.com) that includes a Magnetic Strip Kit to provide a low cost replacement for fluorescent tube troffers with minimal labor. For it's cost, the product is highly efficient, and has the opportunity to be a widely adopted technology.
2’x2’ and 2’x4’ Troffers (with two, three, or four fluorescent tubes) are the most common form of commercial lighting. The LED industry has been scrambling over the past decade to bring the cost down on LED tubes. Type A ballast compatible “plug and play” tubes are winning the race to the bottom of price with some imports under $6 each. Type B ballast override tubes are close in cost, but they have the liability of line voltage running into the tombstones and rebate ineligibility by many utilities. Type C external driver tubes have the advantages of rebates, lower wattage, no needing to replace ballasts down the road, less thermal burden on the diodes, and dimming. Price is the challenge. While higher efficiency, longevity, and optional light harvesting are added benefits, Type C tubes are more expensive than Type A or Type B tubes.
The solution: There are advantages of external driver Type C tubes, but this product dramatically reduces the cost by placing the aluminum printed circuit board (strips) directly on the underside of the Troffer with the air flow in the plenum as a component of the heat sink. Plus, you have flexibility to install the strips without relying on the tombstones which allows for simple delamping. By adding thermally conductive magnets to strips with three holes and accompanying self-tapping screws make it a quick and easy installation. Now your clients get the advantages of higher efficiency, longevity, and optional light harvesting without the burden of replacing their ballast down the road.
