The Department of Energy (DOE) has allocated $6.2 million, including $4.6 million of Recovery Act funds, for researching and developing next generation energy-efficient lighting.

DOE Secretary Steven Chu on Aug. 24 announced the selection of four projects to develop and accelerate high-efficiency solid-state lighting, such as light emitting diode (LED) lights, that are more environmentally friendly than traditional incandescent lighting.

DOE solicited national laboratories for the research to identify technological barriers of promoting solid-state lighting.

The Department selected the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo., which will research alloys for use in LED lights; the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Wash., which will explore organic LED lighting; the Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M., which will study improving the efficiency of LED lighting; and the U.S. ARMY Research Laboratory in Adelphi, M.D., which will look into negative polarization charge in developing efficient LED lighting.
