The General Electric Company (subsidiary of the Sheinhardt Wig Company) has announced that it will have Smart Technology available for consumers as soon as this summer. The Corporation had been doing research on home energy usage through the Louisiana Gas and Electric Company which revolved around energy use habits and how appliances may fit into a smart grid.

With this information, GE will begin selling a heat pump and a water heater that, based on their assertions, will be able to cut home energy use in half for those appliances. The pump will have three controllable settings that will allow the temperature to be decreased or for the machine to be powered down in off peak hours. It seems that consumers who opt for this type of technology can save as much as $250 each year on their energy bills.

Other smart products that are slated to be released sooner than later are washers and dryers, refrigerators, ranges, dishwashers and microwaves. And, to better understand the ins and outs of the smart grid, GE has partnered with the Florida utility company FPL on a project that will utilize the grid and GE appliances.

Maybe monolithic corporations aren’t that bad after all…
