GE Unveils "40 Watt" LED Light Bulb

General Electric wants to put a long-lasting, energy-saving light bulb in every lamp on every bedside table.

They are calling their new product - designed to mimic the performance of a 40 Watt incandescent bulb - Energy Smart LED bulbs, and they hope to have them on the market before the end of 2010.

At $40 or more per bulb, some people will be reluctant to make the switch, but considering that GE's new bulbs are highly energy efficient, do not contain mercury, need no warm-up time to give off full light, and will last for 17 years, others will have no trouble justifying the upfront investment.

John Strainic, global product general manager of GE Lighting, put it this way: "This is a bulb that can virtually light your kid's bedroom desk lamp from birth through high school graduation."
