The kitchen is a great place to start to be more environmentally friendly, considering it is where we generate a considerable amount of waste. It seems that everyone and everything is claiming green these days. Reynolds Consumer Products has introduced Reynolds Wrap® Foil from 100 percent Recycled Aluminum.

The recycled foil is made from post-consumer and post-industrial aluminum. It’s amazing that items such as stadium seats, gutters, and industrial scraps can be made into a kitchen product. These aluminum pieces are then taken and melted down, reaching temperatures above 1,200 degrees F in order to burn off debris. It is then filtered and poured into the sheets that are sent to your kitchen. The packaging and cardboard roll are also made from 100 percent recycled materials.

Reynolds says the process of making aluminum foil from recycled aluminum uses 80 percent less energy than it takes to make aluminum foil from virgin aluminum.

To go above and beyond, recycled aluminum foil can be recycled again or repurposed.

Alternatives to aluminum foil for food preparation and storage include unbleached parchment paper, soy-based parchment paper, which is petroleum free, non-toxic and biodegradable, and silicone baking sheets, which are reusable and, therefore, reduce waste.

There are also new options for biodegradable food storage containers to cut down on disposing of waste such as foil, plastic wrap and paper in the kitchen.

What are you favorite methods for greening your kitchen and reducing environmental impact?
