Over the last week we have been discussing how correctional facility lighting interacts with human and non-human environments and can thus affect the security of a facility. We have talked about how the implementation of lighting manufacturer Independence LED’s Correctional Facility LED Tube plays a role in various aspects of internal security and also serves to decrease energy consumption for correctional facilities. What we change our focus to today is to a discussion on how external, or perimeter security can be influenced by the implementation of LEDs.
As we mentioned in our first “Bright Ideas” article, the majority of threats to security and escapes happen during prisoner transport. However, perimeter security plays an important role in this as it is the last means of defense against breaches of security. Put simply by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, “[Facilities] should have perimeter lighting which illuminates the surrounding areas in order to prevent persons from approaching the facilities under cover of darkness.” They go on to highlight that the areas requiring proper lighting include parking areas, entrance paths, entrances to facilities themselves, exterior walls, the perimeter fence, and more. Why it is important to consider the implementation of LED lighting here is this: Because of their extended lifetime, LEDs present greater reliability than conventional fluorescent tubes and incandescent bulbs. This means that LEDs offer greatly reduced frequencies in maintenance and will also be more dependable than conventional lighting systems.
