It is important that we teach our children to live greener lives, to care for our Earth. Being a green role model for children is an important step in this process.

How can eco friendly children be raised? By parents, teachers and other community members serving as role models for them.

Teaching begins at home. When parents strive to live greener lives, they become the most important role models in their children's lives. There are many tactics that parents can incorporate into their lives that will show their children how to live greenly. Parents may garden with their children outdoors during the summer and indoors during the winter. Explain to children why organic practices are important, and how plants lessen the pollution inside of the home.

When parents explain their transportation choices, children will understand the impact of their actions on the environment.

Tell children why certain eco-friendly cleaning products are used, and why caring for pets in a particular way is important. Doing so will show them the connection between a healthy environment and healthy people and animals.

Children can be taught to reduce, reuse and recycle, especially when parents teach them to shop yard sales and resale shops. Clothing, furniture and many other useful items can be found in these places. By purchasing items second-hand, the products will be saved from landing in landfills.

When parents work at green jobs, they are teaching their children to look for jobs that are eco-friendly. Explaining to children why it’s important to create a greener community will go a long way in teaching children environmentally friendly practices.

Other things that parents can do to become green role models are:

  • Composting, indoor and/or outdoor.
  • Vermicomposting inside the home.
  • Setting up recycling bins in the home.
  • Choosing BPA free products.
  • Green remodeling, when remodeling is necessary.

Living green becomes a way of life once you start, and teaching your children to live green will help the future of the earth and society.
