Being a green mom should not be too hard. It is really up to you how far you take it. For me it means taking some basic steps to do my little bit to help the environment. Today’s society is so wasteful – we think nothing of throwing away food and clothes that have nothing wrong with them!

This is part one of a three part series on how to be a green mom - it will focus on a couple of very basic things you can do to be a greener mom. The second post will offer some ideas on how to get the kids involved in your green efforts. And the third post will explore a few more advanced things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint.

Cloth diapers – Yes they are not as convenient as normal diapers, but they can be used part of the time with normal diapers as back-up. They are costly to buy, however, in the long run, you will save money. Your baby is less likely to have problems with diaper rash, as cloth diapers don’t have the chemicals that disposable diapers have. It has also been reported that it is easier to potty train children with cloth diapers.

Don’t buy all new clothes for your baby – We all want to go buy loads of new clothes for our kids so they look adorable! However, there are so many lovely clothes you can get either as hand-me-downs or as gifts from other parents. Don’t worry that they are second hand, I compromise with myself here – I go out and buy some lovely clothes for special occasions and try to get everyday stuff second hand. You will always need to buy some stuff from the shops, but you can drastically reduce this by looking for second hand options.

What about green baby food? There are plenty of companies out there who produce green baby food. One example of such a company is Homemade Baby. Their certified organic baby food comes in 3 different consistencies: so smooth, good mushy, and kinda chunky. The meals are kosher, gluten-free, and don’t contain any genetically modified ingredients. Packaging is microwavable and, of course, recyclable.

Green toys are getting more popular and many major toy firms are now producing them. Using recycled plastic or reclaimed wood means these toys are far more environmentally friendly. Demand is rising for these toys, and buying them will only help them become the norm rather than a niche product.
