Hiring, spending and attention in environmental departments is growing, according to a 2009 study conducted by GreenBiz.

GreenBiz queried over 600 companies, which responded that their environmental departments and initiatives have expanded. The companies also said spending in environmental and health and safety departments at large corporations has risen.

GreenBiz conducted the research in July and August 2009 and compared the results with finding of a similar survey done in late 2008. Most respondents are U.S. companies, approximately 70 percent. More than half of the responders have annual revenues of less than $10 million, while 21 percent reap more than $1 billion annually.

The study found that the top green agenda item for large companies is reducing energy consumption via efficiency. It further found that green product development is important for large and small companies — more than 80 percent noted equal or greater investment compared to last year.
