Not to be left behind in the new and efficient management of data centers, Yahoo! has planned to build a new data center in Lockport, New York that will utilize hydroelectric power from Niagara Falls. About 90% of the electricity generated from the crashing walls of water will go towards powering their servers. In order to dispel the biggest need for energy at data centers, which is cooling the data servers, the center will be constructed like a large chicken coup, making use of the outside air to cool the servers all on its own. None of the hydroelectric power generated from the waterfall will be used to cool the servers, which usually take up about 50% of a data server’s energy needs.

Yahoo! Also plans to cut the carbon footprint for all their data centers by 40% by the year 2014. They feel that this can be accomplished by utilizing more renewable energies and building the data centers more efficiently.
