AECOM Environment Conducts Landmark Study of Renewable Energy from Organic Waste Treatment

AECOM Environment is assessing the viability of turning organic waste into energy, fuel and power for Hong Kong's Environmental Protection Department (EPD). This succeeds an earlier EPD-commissioned AECOM Environment study of the design and development of a pilot large-scale biodegradable waste treatment facility in Hong Kong. As consultants to the EPD of the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, AECOM Environment is conducting the $800,000 Organic Waste Treatment Facility Feasibility Study beginning with the preliminary design and an engineering feasibility of the renewable energy project, followed by an evaluation of energy recovery alternatives and potential on-site and off-site utilization.

The energy recovery evaluation will analyze the practicality of anaerobic digestion -- using microorganisms to break down biodegradable material in absence of oxygen -- in the generation of energy from organic waste. It will also examine turning the biogas produced in the waste treatment process into vehicle fuel, as well as its use for power generation.

The study complements AECOM Environment's South East Kowloon Material Recovery and Transfer Study, which examines combining a large-scale refuse transfer station with a material recovery facility. In the past year, AECOM has been awarded nearly $2,000,000 of waste management work by the EPD, including an organic waste survey and collection arrangement study in Hong Kong, and treatment of food waste from the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian Events in Hong Kong.
