A team of American and Australian scientists have located the coldest, driest and calmest place on earth, where no human has likely ever set foot, and the perfect place for an observatory. In the search for a future observatory site, astronomers identified a high, flat area on the Antarctic Plateau, Science Daily reported Sept. 1.

The scientists believe this spot, called Ridge A, will provide images sharper than any ever taken from Earth, the article said. The site experiences average winter temperatures of -70ºC and is nearly devoid of water. In fact, there is “almost no wind or weather there at all,” Dr. Will Saunders from the Anglo-Australian Observatory and visiting University of New South Wales professor said.

Ridge A is expected to provide better images of space than observatories currently situated on mountain tops in Hawaii and Chile, Dr. Saunders told Science Daily. The research is being published in the Publications of the Astronomical Society, the article said.
