The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) last week announced it is providing up to $85 million under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for leading researchers to develop algae-based biofuels and other advanced biofuels. DOE is calling for a collaboration among scientists and engineers from the academic, business and government sectors to expedite the availability of biofuels in the market.
In addition to algae-based biofuels, DOE seeks research and development with other biofuels other than cellulosic ethanol such as bio-based hydrocarbon fuels that are compatible with existing fuel infrastructure.
In May, DOE allocated $786.5 million in Recovery Act funding for new and existing projects in biorefineries, sustainability research, infrastructure-compatible biofuels and ethanol research.
