National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) May Increase Energy Efficiency on Military Bases with Pennsylvania Made LED Lighting

Independence LED Lighting receives funding from the Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania

Philadelphia, PA (August 27, 2018) Independence LED Lighting announced today that it has received funding from the Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania (Ben Franklin) The funding will be used to advance Independence LED Lighting’s light-emitting diode (LED) technology offerings to reduce energy waste for U.S. military bases as well as civilian agencies and private sector facilities.

“Ben Franklin has a network of clean-tech providers and portfolio companies that could benefit from the advancements generated through Independence LED’s DC Microgrid work, said Mark Trabbold, Director of Business Development, “We are happy to support this new technology and provide the connections and mentoring support to help evaluate new opportunities.”

On Monday, August 13, 2018, President Trump signed the "John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019" (NDAA) which includes an expected $10 billion per year in military construction spending and a focus on energy and climate security. This is very positive for American manufacturers of energy-efficient technology, such as LED lighting.

The resources help activate President Trump's "Buy American and Hire American" Executive Order, signed April 18, 2017, which directs military and civilian agencies to buy American made products, including lighting. The challenge to date has been that the agencies did not necessarily have the budgets to act on the executive order and upgrade their lighting to energy-saving LED technology. Now, the new NDAA funding gives the Military the means to purchase LED lighting, that is made in America per the executive order and the Buy American Act (BAA) Compliance.
