This is one of the profiles in an ongoing series covering next generation agriculture. We are seeing an increased trend for indoor farming across the United States and around the world. This is a positive trend given that local farming reduces adverse CO2 emissions from moving food long distances. If you would like us to review and profile your company, just let us know! Contact Us

 Company Profile: Falling Waters Farm

Here's a great example of  a practical use of an Aquaponics system to grow produce

Here is some of the “About Us” content:

The mission of Falling Waters Farm is to provide the highest-quality, locally-produced fish, basil, leafy greens, and microgreens in an efficient, environmentally-responsible and sustainable manner.

Our farm is located in a warehouse in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. We grow indoors, all year around and are currently growing basil, leafy greens, many different types of microgreens. We also raise Blue Nile Tilapia.

We are a Food Safe facility using organic practices to grow the best possible clean and local produce. We grow using a fraction of the space and water as an outdoor farm does.

We are certified food safe by the USDA Harmonized GAP food safety audit. We are listed on the USDA website. We also have organic certification. We are certified USDA Organic by EcoCert ICO.

Our farm uses a decoupled Aquaponics system with a proprietary sanitizing step between the systems. Aquaponics is the symbiotic cultivation of vegetables and fish in a closed, recirculating water system. Fish need purified clean water in order to thrive. Likewise, plants need organic nutrients in order to grow. Fish create water conditions that are naturally rich in plant nutrients. Plants, in turn, uptake nutrients thus purifying the water for return to the fish. Biological and high-tech filtration further cleanses and sanitizes the water for re circulation.

To date, the cost of man made lighting has been a barrier for indoor agriculture. A new generation of LED lighting provides cost effective opportunities for farmers to deliver local produce. Warehouses and greenhouses are both viable structures for next generation agriculture. Here is one example of next generation made in USA LED grow light technology to help farmers: Commercial LED Grow Lights
