OMAHA, Neb. —

The coronavirus is changing course and Nebraska is on the wrong path.

"Nebraska is now a state that we consider a red zone," Dr. Robert Redfield, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

Nebraska and California are both now "Red Zone" states with positivity rates COVID-19 tests above 10%.

According to the head of the White House's Coronavirus Task Force both states have seen spikes in positive cases while states that had been COVID-19 red zones like Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia, are now seeing a decreased in positive cases.

"It's an area where I would look at this data and I would say we need help," Redfield said.

Redfield looked over the data for Douglas County as well. It's also considered a COVID-19 red zone.

"You can see how effective you've been in getting people to change their behavior and wear masks by the numbers," Redfield said. "It tells me there's a lot of room to grow."

According to numbers from the Douglas County Department of Health, the county hit a spike in it's positivty rate for tests in May at 23.6%. The number had been declining until last month. Since mid-July, the positivity rate has increased from 6.9% to 11% today.

Redfield says getting Nebraska and Douglas County back on the right path and a downward case count is as simple as wearing masks.

"If you do do that it does change. We've seen remarkable changes in Arizona, Texas and Florida, but really by taking it seriously and getting the public to embrace masks," he said.

Redfield also said the numbers show school districts need to take a closer look at their plans for safely returning students to class, but he thinks it can still be done.
