OKLAHOMA CITY —

How are Oklahoma's hospitals handling the number of COVID-19 patients? KOCO 5 spoke with OU’s Chief COVID-19 Officer Dr. Dale Bratzler on Wednesday, and he said they're managing it, but he's calling for the state to do more to slow the spread.

Bratzler continues to call for a statewide mask mandate instead of it being done city-by-city with an average right now of 850 daily cases and about 1,100 reported on Wednesday.

“Today's [Wednesday] number was a bit bigger than I expected, and I think there was some catch-up data potentially there from the weekend, but that's not always entirely clear," Bratzler said.

Bratzler said he is tracking the numbers including what percentage of tests run are coming back positive. It's up to just under 10% right now over the past week.

He’s also looking at the number of hospitalizations, stable statewide over 600.

“I think the hospital system in Oklahoma is sustaining it, the question is it appropriate, is that what we want? Six hundred people a day to be in the hospital with COVID-19?" Bratzler said.

A big concern now is that the number in the intensive care unit is around roughly 40%.

“If you see people in the ICU for that period of time, you're just going to see some deaths. And, you know, we've been having 50 to 60 deaths a week right now being reported, and I just don't think that's acceptable," Bratzler said.

Bratzler said with testing delays it's still early to know if city's mask mandates are working.

“Honestly, I think it would be a lot easier for Oklahomans if we just had a statewide mask mandate, let's get this over with, let's knock it down, so we can resume activities like they used to be," Bratzler said.

Ten more Oklahomans have died of COVID-19 and 837 others have contracted it, according to state health officials.

Thursday’s reporting brings the state’s death toll to 593 with 41,401 COVID-19 infections confirmed.

Two of the recently reported deaths were of Tulsa County residents, both 65 or older.

Across the state, 643 are hospitalized, Oklahoma State Department of Health reporting shows.

Tulsa County reported 227 new cases Thursday. There have been 103 fatal cases out of 9,969 confirmed COVID-19 infections for Tulsa County residents; 1,407 cases remain active, according to the Tulsa Health Department.
